Hi there.
When I got Bailey his passport I just went to my vet and they did most of the hard work. He (Bailey not the vet) was already microchipped and had been vaccinated against rabies which is the first to steps.
The vet then completed a blue passport for him which cost me about 40 euros. It's a bit like a vaccination book but european. That was enough for us to travel with Bailey into Portugal but if you're going to UK then it's a bit more complicated.
Your vet will need to do a blood test to show that rabies vaccination has worked at least 30 days after the rabies jab. You have to wait 6 months after a successful blood test to be able to take your pet into the UK.
After the vet has done the blood test, he will send you to the local office where you can go with the blood test results and they will give you the rest of the papers you need. You can do this before the six months are up but they papers they give you won't be valid until the six month period is finished.
Also, 24-48 hours before you enter the UK you have to visit a vet for tick and worming treatment. If you're driving back via Calais there are many French vets that will do this for you and sign the papers.
I use Tamara Vets in Estepona who are always great with things like this. Marcel speaks perfect English as well which makes things a bit simpler!
Hope this helps.

Fantastic information, thanks Charlotte.
I wish I was a domestic goddess, I just seem to ruin everything....know anything about marbleworktops?
There's a big difference between a wannabe goddess and a domestic goddess. I'm a disaster area!!!
What about marble worktops in particular???
Ok Today I started the process of getting a Pet Passport. Just needed a Blood Test and the Blue Passport. Then in 2 weeks Vet will call me with hopefully good news. Then wait 6 months!
So had the vacinations done. Went back to collect the blood test results - all were fine. I then had to go with the passport and the blood tests to the Agricultura Office in Estepona to be stamped. I did this, its just by Lidl. A week later I received a letter and card for my dog from www.raia.org. with all my dogs details. Really good service
Hurrah - dog is official now!
