Ben & Jerry Birthday Cakes La Cañada

I went to a birthday party a while back and they had a ben & jerry birthday cake, obviously full of ice cream. It was delicious!!!

Yesterday, whilst pondering what cake to get we passed by to enquire. They had a couple already prepared but it had cheesecake Icecream which I didnt like.

But then they had a red one that was iced but not decorated. So they asked what we wanted on it and it was ready for collection this morning.

24€ including decoration, they put it in a box and a special bag is 2€ which you can get back if you return it.

They even gave me paper bowls too.

They say will serve about 10 to 12 kids.

Will let you know what its like.

Guitar Hero Mic not working - mic not recognised.

Had Guitar Hero for about a year now and bought the microphone afterwards.

Its always been a little tricky but they have both worked until now. The microphone just is not recognised. When it starts up it sees that a microphone is plug in but then once we choose the songs it says "a microphone needs to be connected".

We have tried everything, used all 4 hand remotes, unplugged it, reset, put mic in before, middle and after.

Its just not working.

If anyone can help please email in.

Where to buy nice presents in Marbella

Its always after Christmas that I find perfect little shops to buy gifts from. Next year I know exactly where to go! Marbella Old Town.

This year I spent my life in La Cañada but mainly because of the weather....when its pouring down outside, La Cañada really is the best place....but to be honest I find it so boring.

Last night we took a walk around Marbella Old Town and there was quite a nice atmosphere. We found a couple of beautiful little Olive Oil Shop that also sold beauty products, soaps, shampoo and also chocolate. There was also a beautiful soap shop just like Lush in the UK that sold the most beautiful slices of cake soaps.

So if you are looking for something a little different its these little individual shops in the Old Towns where yo will find something.

Novellis Puerto Banus Closed - Novellis Closed

For the moment I have removed the original post that was here as I was told it was untrue that Novellis has closed.

But the sign has been taken down as many people have noticed and have been told by a couple of people that it has shut.

It has also made news in the newspapers about Novellis closing in Marbella here http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1238993/Novelli-cooks-storm.html

However, Ive been told by the Hotel that Christmas Dinner was served and New Years Eve is still on which is great news and that the restaurant is still in "full operation".

All a little confusing, but thats Marbella and rumours for you ;)

Teachers in Marbella - Familiarity.

Marbella is a small place and quite often you will bump into the same person frequently. So if you are a teacher you are going to bump into the kids from your school at some point.

Today I was with my daughter who spotted 2 teachers from her school, now 5 / 6 year olds do get rather excited. We often see teachers who normally say "Hello" "How Are You" Good Bye" quite simple really and considering they teach all about good manners - this is what I would expect from them too.

But today 1 of the teachers we said hello to, looked rather uncomfortable whilst the other teacher stepped back and hid and pretended she wasnt there. Either she didnt want to see me, my child or she didnt want to be seen with the person she was with - I dont know, but to hide?

Not good manners.

Buying a Ham in Spain

Every Christmas the supermarkets are filled with Legs of Ham or Jamon. We have seen these for 7 years and seen the Spanish tasting and buying them. They seem to range from 40 right up to a few hundred Euros.

Because of our lack of knowledge we have always been a little scared...

1) Dont want to buy a whole ham and not like the flavour.

2) Dont really understand how or what is best.

3) Not be able to cut it.

4) Just end up wasting money

But on Saturday in Hypercor and seeing lots of people buying them we plucked up the courage to buy one. We tried it first and then the lady found one that was ready for use. We paid 79€. Then a stand which was 15 reduced to 11. Plus a knife with sharpener that came with a dvd about cutting ham.

Brought it home, stuck it downstairs in the utility area. We put it on the stand and then started to carve the top then around the sides abit.

Slicing this ham thin is alot more difficult that it seems. The knife is also very sharp and already cut ourselves a number of times.

We watched the video that gave us a bit of understanding but too be honest we arent very good at slicing. But we are getting there and practice makes perfect and it is quite nice to have ham always here and yesterday I even took a plate round to some friends.

We do wish now we bought it from one of our friends who is Spanish, who knows all about Hams and sells them. It would have been better to have been shown exactly what to do and how to do it in our own home. Unfortunately my husband decided he wanted it there and then and when I called her she didnt have any at that time. She has been around ham all her life and knows everything you need to know about them.

Theres quite alot to know and the more you know the more you appreciate what you are eating I think. Im going to see if I can put my friends phone number up here but if you are interested in the meantime, email me jomarbella@gmail.com

Over this weekend, talking to a few other sets of friends, they also would love to buy a ham but just dont have the confidence.

Update...Ok, so the doorbell just went and it was my friend who said she would come and show me how to slice the ham. She told me that the ham I bought was good but it wasnt what I thought which was. Also we hadnt cut it completely right and it should have been the other way.

She was saying that sometimes the hoof is painted black and not really black. Also a Pata Negra Iberia ham hoof should have some splits in it where it has been digging for the acorns to eat.

Theres so much more to ham than many people realise. Also she told me that you wouldnt get a proper Pata Negra fed only on Acorns for under 200€.

Loads of information here on Wikipedia

For a first ham Im pleased we didnt spend too much and use the cheaper one to try and learn to carve and then maybe next time spend a bit more. But if you buy too cheap, the ham may not be what you expect and put you off completely. Personally, if its your first go buy from someone that has time to show you what to do. My friend has told me that we havent cut enough and wasting alot of meat thats there. It could have been cut better basically but Hypercor dont have the time to explain this to first timers.

Words for Ande Ande Ande - Palabras De Ande Ande Ande

This time of year one of the main songs most of the children are singing is Ande Ande Ande. Personally I always try and find the words and print them off and make sure they my daughter knows the words correctly and not just mumbling along.

Its also great for me to learn them too and makes it so much more fun for her....especially when I do it all wrong. The songs are so fast.

So here are the words for Ande Ande Ande from this website. http://ingeb.org/songs/andeande.html

Ande, ande, ande La Marimorena
Ande, ande que es la Nochebuena

En el portal de Belén hay estrellas, sol y luna
la Virgen y San José, y el Niño que está en la cuna
Y si quieres comprar pan más blanco que la azucena
en el portal de Belén la Virgen es panadera

Ande, ande, ande La Marimorena
Ande, ande que es la Nochebuena

Un pastor comiendo sopas en el aire divisó
un ángel que le decía ha nacido el Redentor
De Oriente salen tres Reyes para adorar al Dios Niño
una estrella les guiaba para seguir el camino.

Ande, ande, ande La Marimorena
Ande, ande que es la Nochebuena

A esta puerta hemos llegado
cuatrocientos en cuadrilla
si quieres que nos sentemos
saca cuatrocientas sillas

Ande, ande, ande La Marimorena
Ande, ande que es la Nochebuena

Saca una para mi
y otra "pa" mi compañero
y los que vengan detrás
que se sienten en el suelo

Ande, ande, ande La Marimorena
Ande, ande que es la Nochebuena

En el portal de Belén
han entrado los ratones
y al bueno de San José
le han roido los calzones

Ande, ande, ande La Marimorena
Ande, ande que es la Nochebuena

Where can I buy Go Go Hamster in Marbella, Spain

If you are looking for the latest craze - GoGo Hamster, El Corte Ingles have a few left. Just yesterday they had loads of single gogo hamsters for 12.95€ and the box sets with tubes / slides for 40€.

Tonight there were 3 single ones left and a few boxes...apparently loads of English People have bought them all up for their families back in the UK as they have sold out, the guy working in El Corte Ingles was telling me.

There is this warning about Chemicals Causing Cancer in them, but then theres always something isnt there.

I bought a little one on his own, thought it might be quite fun for the dog to chase around too. Especially when its raining and he dont want to go out for a walk...he might burn off some energy.

La Moraga Sweet Puerto Banus Marbella

In one of the justs between Uterque & Pizza Express in Puerto Banus there has been a sign saying "something sweet is coming to Marina Banus".

Well today I saw what is going to be there...

La Moraga Sweet. If the desserts are anything like the tapas Im sure it will be a winner.

Not too sure when its going to be open but the main sign is up!

That is whats missing from Puerto Banus in the evenings, a nice place to sit and take a coffee & dessert.

Last Minute Christmas Accommodation in Marbella

If you are thinking about getting away from all the hustle and bustle of Christmas & New Year and looking for last minute accommodation have a look at www.lamaestranza.eu

Great Location, no need for a car, Puerto Banus is 10 - 15 minutes walk.

Marbella Schools - Not Refunding Deposits.

I hearing a few stories about people not getting their deposit back from International Schools here in Marbella.

If this happened to me - I would be shouting it from the rooftops and standing outside the schools making sure everyone knows about this including the Education Department here and in the UK.

This would be of course if I was in the right!

By that I mean - when you start your child in an international school you sign a contract....contracts are contracts and only if the other party is willing to allow some movement will it be changed.

Some schools take a deposit which is NON REFUNDABLE, some PART REFUNDABLE and some are completely REFUNDABLE although they dont make it that clear.

Before you hand over over 2,000€ READ THE TERMS & CONDITIONS. Normally you have to give a whole terms notice. But if you give a whole terms notice - when do you receive the money back? Check you ask these questions.

There are many people that are struggling who dont have the money for the fees on time because they are waiting to be paid by their bosses or companies that owe them money....some schools may be leanient - but some will not, and you will be asked to remove your child from the school.

If I had given my full notice period and done everything right and still not got back my deposit I would NOT sit quietly. So if you are owed money from any school and you are absolutely certain you have followed all the Terms & Conditions - GO GET IT!

December Weather in Marbella

October November & December 2009 till now have been amazing. Its been sunny and warm during the day, with a little chill at night.

But yesterday it turned proper cold where the coats came out and today I think its even colder as its rainy and dull.

So if you are coming out on holiday - bring layers, dressing gown might be nice for when you come out of the shower and slipper....slippers are a MUST the floors are cold.

Yves Rocher La Cañada - Eye Make Up Remover Review

Yves Rocher in La Cañada sell lots of different beauty products and also is a beauticians too with all the usual services. The girls are quite nice that work there.

As Im rather concerned about my skin and darkness and bags under my eyes I realise that I have to get a good eye make up remover. I bought theirs which is half blue and you have to shake it. I think it is REALLY good.

I have used a few makes mainly baby oil which leaves you greasy but also had expensive like Mac Eye Makeup Remover which I thought was completely over priced and stung my eyes.

This Yves Rocher Eye Make Up Remover goes on really nicely and removes mascara really easily without having to drag or rub hard. Im pretty sensitive and had no reactions at all.

If you buy something in there you should get a booklet full of discounts which makes things really cheap. Eye Remover lotion was about 7.50€

So Yves Rocher Eye Make Up Remover gets a complete Thumbs Up.

Novellis Christmas Day Lunch

It sounded positive - when next in the area we shall probably try it, I just emailed Novelli's as there is not a sausage about their menus and prices, think they have missed out there?

Just a lot of recipes, cookery course info/prices and books for sale etc. What are they doing on the day menu and Sunday BBQ? Do you know what prices these are.

We live in Antequera so it's a fair old ride from here.Any info most gratefully received.Keep smiling...A H

Hi A

Here is a link to all the details for Christmas dinner http://nuevaandalucia.blogspot.com/2009/11/novellis-christmas-day-novellis-new.html and News years eve. Its 75€uros. Novellis is a funny one and although I enjoyed the food, there was a lack of atmosphere so you need to be in a group really, although xmas day should be good. I liked it, some other people hated it...so its a real mix. Hope you have a good time though Regards Joanne

Vets in Nerja

Hi Jo, I was wondering, with your obvious knowledge of the Malaga area, if you could recommend a GOOD, fully equipped veterinary clinic?. I live in Nerja, but our local vet's are small and lack equipment for many analysis tests etc....I have a dog with a problem and need a second opinion, preferably from a modern well equipped surgery with access to CT machine, Xray, blood testing equipment etc...I don't mind how far I have to travel. Thank you in advance for any advice given Michelle

Hi Michelle,

Im not too sure of one in Nerja but will post your question up and see if someone comes back to us.

Joanne

Christmas Dinner in Malaga City - Restaurants in Malaga

Hi Jo,
I recognize that this may be a little strange, but I don't know where to turn! My name is Kathleen, and I'm a 21 year old American living in Malaga. I'm working for the year as an auxiliar de conversacion in a colegio en Malaga, and my parents are coming to visit for Christmas. They want to go out to eat at a nice restaurant for Christmas, but I don't know if any would be open? Any advice would be much appreciated. I've only been in Malaga for two months and am not familiar with the area or customs for Christmas.
Thank you so much for taking pity on me and helping me.
Kathleen

Hi Kathleen I dont Know Malagga Restaurants too well. Although I know there is a Cafe de Paris there which apparently is nice, although mayb e bit expensive. 24th December Night is the big night for Christmas and then closed Christmas Day 25th. Supermarkets are normally open on the 24th but close earlier. If you come to Marbella there is Novellis, and numerous nice hotels and lots of restaurants around doing christmas dinner.

Happy Holidays

Joanne

peter

Hi Peter, If you can find Nagueles (the first exit through the tunnel from Puerto Banus to La Canada) to the left hand side the mountain side is Parque Nagueles...this is a large rough park area. At the top of that road a friend of mine often walks her dog up the mountain side a little. If you go to Istan - about 25 minutes up there are numerous walking and cycling routes all laid out on maps. Short to very long ones.

Ive been trying to find the website for the routes...but having trouble. Have found this though

Free Eye Test Marbella - El Corte Ingles

For the past 4 or 5 weeks now I have been suffering with migraines along with cold, sore throat etc.

But the past week my right eye hasnt felt right. If feels like Im straining it and have pain around the bone area too. In fact it has been 100% right since I had bells palsy.

So I thought Id start with the Opticians and popped to the one in El Corte Ingles. Asked How much - they said Free!

So I went back today at 5.30 and they said they couldnt really see anything different and that my prescription has changed only very slightly.

So after reading a few scary things on the internet and a friend suffering from a detached retina, I think Ill pop along to the doctor to see if they can see anything.

The only way I can describe is its that my eye ball feels too big for the socket and its being squeezed.

But anyway, enough about my probs...Eye Tests are Free in El Corte Ingles...but I guess they will keep your prescription so you go back there to buy your glasses.

Ive booked my daughter in for a quick appointment too

What Kids Eat in Spain

Tonight I asked my daughter what she fancied for dinner.

Her answer was...

Sardines, olives, pickled cucumbers and tomatoes oh and bread dipped in Olive Oil. Nearly 6 years old.

Amazing!

Royal Canine y Hills Comida Para Mascotas Marbella

Cheap Dog Food Puerto Banus - Royal Canin Pet Food Marbella

If you use Royal Canin pet food, you can buy this from various places. Upstairs in El Corte Ingles Puerto Banus, the pet shop in La Cañada and a few other places.

In El Corte Ingles on the 3rd floor (i think) they have some really really good discounts - genuine discounts on pet food and things.

On Hills Pet food there is 2 for 1 or 70% off the 2nd unit. On Royal Canin the big packets are 3 for 2 so you get 3 - 3 kg bags for 50€uros!

The smaller bags for slightly older dogs are on offer for 2 for 1.

My dog is 8 months so I bought 3 for 2 on the puppy food and whilst there bought 2 for 1 on the 10 month plus food. Saving 25€ on the big pack and 18€ on the smaller pack.

Not only that!!! As it came to over 60€ I then got a receipt to take to Atencion Cliente to get a card with 10€ bonification on. 10€ that I can spend on anything and no minimum to spend!

So after the false discounts the other day in Hypercor - I was very happy to get such a bargain and 10€ on top.

Offer is valid until begining of January.

El Corte Ingles Puerto Banus Opening Times Christmas

El Corte Ingles & La Cañada are both open on Sundays through the month of December

Hours are 10am to 10pm.

For new year Im not too sure although normally closed 1st & 6th from memory.

Gala Perfumerie Marina Banus

Gala the perfume shop downstairs Marina Banus nearly always have 10% off everything.

Today there was a sign saying 20% of Novedades Perfumes. Obviously the perfume I picked up didnt have 20% but only 10%.

However, they said - "ok we will give you 20% off if you want to buy it" I couldnt beleive - this Crisis is fantastic!

But....I didnt know what the real price was and wondered if they had raised it 20%...well I wouldnt put it past them!

So I ran over the El Corte Ingles to check the price and yes it was the same price! So ran back to Gala and bought it with 20% off. Not only that I got lots of samples, a ticket with 2 hours free parking in Marina Banus and a points card...oh and gift wrapped so I dont have to bother!

Yippee I love it when I get a bargain!

Gala 10% off everything and their top 5 perfumes have 20% off but I think you could neg 20% off whatever perfume you choose.

Princess Studios Marina Banus - Princess Studios Marbella

So this morning I plucked up the courage to go to Princess Studios in Marina Banus all by myself. 4 people let me down for 1 reason or another, Im sure all genuine, although maybe they were a little apprehensive like myself.

Most people who have lived around Puerto Banus for a while will have heard or seen Suzy the Pole Dancer around or in magazines & openings of night clubs and beach bars. Suzy is one of the girls that own (I think or part own) Princess Studios.

So, when you hear Pole Dancing, Burlesque, you may also think other things and assume what its going to be like and what the people teaching are like too.

So the free taster session was 11am till 12.30. As Im so English I was there at 10.55 thinking this was going to start ontime....oh no.

Lots of talking, lots of people that all seemed to be the different teachers and then finally some people for the taster session like my goodself.

It was actually about 12.20 before we started - and started off with watching a Pole Dance.

If Im going to be honest, I actually couldnt WAIT to get on the Pole...yeah I could do that, no problem....haha think again.

Its bloody hard and if you think pole dancers are just sexily dressed girls jumping up and down and twirling around a pole - think again. These girls are really strong and very talented! 5 minutes of that and I was knackered and peed off that I found it so difficult.

Next up was a quick aerobic session, followed by hoola hooping....of which,I also thought was going to be dead easy....Im telling you the teacher has it on very fine wires holding it up - watch out for them!

Then there was a bit of belly dancing with some shimmying followed by burlesque which I was very good at hahaha.

Then there was Anoulka (I think) who does Pop Princess Dancing and has danced with Kylie...she was lovely and I really enjoyed her class.

All of this and then ended up with sit ups and stretching which I just couldnt do.

A couple of the teachers doing the sexy stuff were in Short Shorts or knickers with tight tops and whilst other teachers were just normally dressed in loose excercise clothing.

To be honest if you are going to be doing Pole Dancing or Burlesque I think you would feel better and dance better if you think you look good too.

All in all a really good morning, all the other people were really nice too and there for the same reasons...to do some excercise but have fun too.

Theres loads of classes to choose from throughout the whole day. They have a really good special offer on at the moment of 100€ for 10 classes. Normally 15€ per class.

More information at www.princessstudios.com

If you fancy doing something a bit different GO!!!

If I can walk in there on my own anyone can...Im pretty shy at things like this - honest!

I really hope this is a success as its done out great, the idea is great, they are really energized and just need more people to go and have fun.

They also do kids classes to after school and on saturdays and kids birthdays!

Christmas Dinner for Small Companies in Marbella

I have been sent this from Georgina Shaw from Shaw Marketing... I think its a great idea for people that work on their own or have a small company.

Everyone deserves an office Christmas party!
Are you self-employed, retired or a lady of leisure, but don’t want to miss out on a Christmas knees up? Or do you own a small company but don’t have enough people for a proper Christmas party? The Christmas spirit should not be limited to big business, so networking group Business Owners in Spain is organising their first Christmas party for everyone to enjoy.

This party will be held on Saturday 19th December from 19.30 at the beautiful Ogilvy & Mailer Bar and Restaurant in Nueva Andalucia. There will be a festive 3 course meal, including turkey and all the trimmings, half a bottle of wine per person and of course the obligatory crackers for just 30€ per head. You don’t have to be a member to attend, anyone is welcome to join the party.
Georgina Shaw from Shaw Marketing Services came up with the idea. “After being self-employed for two years, I realised I was missing out on all the fun of the company Christmas party, so I decided to organise one for myself and all the people in a similar situation. This will be an excellent opportunity to get into the Christmas spirit, let your hair down and meet people living and working in and around Marbella. It will also be a good way to do a bit of networking! Everyone’s welcome!”

To book your place at the Business Owners in Spain’s Christmas Party please telephone Ogilvy & Mailer on +34 952 815 398 or visit www.ogilvyandmailer.com Look for Business Owners in Spain on Facebook to join the networking group.

AGH Hotel Dont Pay - No Paga Hotel AGH Estepona

Yesterday after a party at Kidz Kingdom, on the way home I passed by the AGH Hotel on the other side of the road.

There were a group of people with banners protesting once again because.....

THEY HAVE NOT BEEN PAID!

Its terrible, companies not paying their staff and this is a constant thing here. I have never known or heard as many cases of this as I have here.

However, until you are an employer you will never understand how difficult, hard and expensive it is to run a business here with staff. The law is so crazy that they make it so hard for employers to get rid of people even if they are not doing a good job. Whilst there are companies that dont pay and continuously dont pay, there are other companies that are good and have paid staff but where they cannot get rid of people or afford to pay them off some have had to take major action like remortgage their houses etc. The law seriously needs to change and change soon.

Dolph Lundgren Ambassador of Marbella

Just found out that Dolph Lundgren has been made Mayor Of Marbella. Full Article on Typically Spanish.

I see Dolph around quite alot, he is huge, a very discreet man. Just a few months ago Dolph Lundgrens Home in Marbella was robbed.

It is welcomed by the Mayor of Marbella Angela Muñoz who has said ‘an authentic privilege to have neighbours as distinguished as Dolph, who could chose any place to live and has decided to be with us’. ‘He will promote the town and its image worldwide’, said Muñoz. Dolph is Swedish along with the Mayor´s Husband I beleive.

Amazing that a foreigner has been elected. We know how Spain likes to keep things in the family like their companies, yet do like to buy other countries companies.

Anyway, hopefully it will all be positive!

Khiels Products in Spain - Khiels El Corte Ingles

El Corte Ingles in Puerto Banus is still having a makeover and the front is being changed. I think the doors are new and they are huge which makes you feel like you are walking into the a huge luxurious department store in London.

All the Christmas Gifts are out and I was wandering around looking for inspiration. Toiletries are so boring but they are the one thing that people dont really buy themselves.

Great selection of brands including Benefit and also now Khiels which has been around for years. Really nice products and they gave me lots of samples to try out.

I now realise why I have problems with eye creams...the girl at Khiels said just put the cream around the bone line...never on the lid or just under!

Hypercor - 50% off Misleading!

Ok, now maybe some of you may know this and understand "Bonifications" in Hypercor & El Corte Ingles.

But personally I find it all rather misleading. Huge Signs above DVDs in Hypercor saying 50% descuento.

So to me thats half price - yes? NO NO NO.

What they mention in tiny tiny words is that its "Bonification".

So you buy them and 50% of the value will get transferred to a Card which then you get to spend against another purchase (which you may have to spend over a certain amount for). Still good however....very very misleading.

Christmas Time - Mood Time

So Christmas is nearly already here and this year Im rather happy and excited about it. But sometimes I think Christmas Time brings bad memories for some and they start feeling the stress and strains of it all.

Its funny how you notice patterns in peoples behaviour and see people suddenly changing around this time. People really find Christmas Stressful.

I can understand why people dont enjoy Christmas Time, especially when loved onces have passed away during this time. But just to get stressed for the sake of it - well Christmas Time just isnt worth it.

Whats there to be stressed about. Its 1 day that comes and goes so quickly. Suddenly we cook like theres no tomorrow, buy presents like the shops are going to run out and eat food that we dont eat for the other 364 days a year.

Buy what you want to buy for people.

Keep within your budget.

Buy 1 good thing rather than lots of little things - as these little things soon mount up.

No need to go spending like mad on food - shops are always open.

Make a list and stick to it.

Buy now, prepare early so come Christmas Eve & Day you only have to cook and not worry about going shopping for last minute presents.

Buy from shops where they wrap or provide wrapping paper - 1 less thing.

Christmas is about being with Family and good friends not about how much money you have spent on someone.

Enjoy Christmas!
