Pros and Cons of living in Gibraltar

Hi

I found your wonderful blog via google. I am a Mum to 2 girls aged 2 and 3½. I'm writing to you hoping you might help me with some information.

I've been offered a 6 month position in Gibraltar and I'm not sure whether to ask to live in Gibraltar or along the coast between Gib and Malaga.

Do you have any knowledge of what the pros and cons are of either location?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,

Lyn

Rent will be at least 50% higher in Gib than in Spain, but you don't have the aggravation of crossing the border every day. If you want any form of garden then Gib is out. The food (restaurants) is also crap in Gib and shopping very expensive (Morrisons VS Lidl or Mercadona). If you want to be central and be able to walk to work / bars / restaurants / then go for Gib but expect to pay at least 1500 sterling per month for a very basic apartment. You could get a house with small garden for that price in the campo. Alternatively Sotogrande is a good compromise between price, distance, and quality of life.

Thanks!

I've read that if you live Spain then you only get access to the health care there. Is that even an issue to consider in your opinion?

Is there more maintenance with a house? Also, do you get much out of a garden between Nov - Jun?
We have a house and garden here at home and over the winter months, we don't get much use from the garden.

Do you know whether there are english-speaking nurseries close to Sotogrande? Is language a barrier if we don't speak spanish?

I live in Gibraltar since three years...and yes it is very expensive. I´m coming from germany and in the beginning I was shocked about the prices.
My husband has a gaming company here...so money is not the problem, but I´m absolutely refuses to see how expensive the food at Morrison Gibraltar is.
I´m going to spain once a week to buy most of the food.

@Sabina Thanks for you feedback. We've decided to live in Gibraltar now since we don't plan to have a car. I'm from Sweden.
I was told by a real estate agent that there is a second supermarket on Gib near the South that is Spanish owned. Have you been there? Is it any cheaper there?
