May Day Fair at The Point Nueva Andalucia
Hi Jo, How are you?
I am just dropping you an email to make sure you know about the May Day Fair at The Point, Nueva Andalucia.
My friend Mary has organised this to help raise money for Cudeca in conjunction with promoting small businesses in the area.
The fair starts at 10am May 1st and will go on all day, there will be lots for the kids, including bouncy castle as well as stalls for jewellery, food (bbq, sushi, sandwiches) and much more. Should be a good day and we would be delighted if you tell as many people as possible. There will also be a raffle to help raise as much as possible for the charity. Hope to see you there and please pass this on,
Kind Regards Lisa
PS (sorry if I just repeated what you already know1!)

Gillian Duffy Romford - Gillian Duffy Gordon Brown
Just seen what happened today with Gordon Brown when he called Gillian Duffy a "Bigoted" woman.
How embarrasing for him and for her actually. Ive been watching most of the debates, even though I dont live in the UK anymore, I still find it interesting. I should pay more attention to whats happening here - I know!
But where did all the respect go? What happened to Yes Prime Minister - Thank You Prime Minister, Your Turn Prime Minister.
On the debate the other day it was "Gordon Brown" - your question. Gillian Duffy said - How are you going to get us out of all this debt Gordon.
Theres no respect anymore.

Polo House Marbella
Today a friend that I meet every week fancied going to see Polo House in Marbella. Both of us had heard good and bad things about it.
So we had just 45 minutes spare this afternoon and popped there just for a drink....and a still drink as we were both driving.
We just sat outside on the bar stools and ordered 2 cokes. Cokes werent cold so was forced to have ice....stupid little thing - but not very impressed.
Ordered 1 more warm coke.
Asked for the bill and my friend handed them over her VIP Marbella Card which did get her 10% discount, making our bill a mear 13.50€!
5€ for a small warm bottle of coke!
They have a sign outside saying LIVE MUSIC every night.
During the day they have a 2 course lunch for 20€ and a 3 course for 25€ I think. If you want the steak then its 5€ extra.
I have heard the food is amazing and that the food is dreadful....maybe one day I try for myself.

You Should Have No Problems if you Live in Spain!
Sometimes you cannot win.
If you say to people how happy you are, they say - the happiest ones have the most problems.
You sound a bit down or low and that things could be better - they say what the hell do you have to complain about? You live in Spain!
Honestly, just because you live in Spain doesnt mean you dont have problems or worries. With some people its like unless you are homeless and starving - you have nothing to complain about.
They say how well off you are compared to others in this world - yet somehow forget themselves in that quote...they live in the UK in a nice house in a nice area with 2 cars and numerous apartments for rental - but because I LIVE IN SPAIN - I SHOULD NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT.
Honestly - I think some people really do have chips on their shoulders when you leave your "Home Country"

Cake Couture Marbella - 3d Cakes Marbella
Last week I had a lovely email from a lady called Omaya who told me how much she found my blog useful when she moved here.
She has recently set up a cake & cupcake company and we started chatting over email. Just so happens it was my husbands birthday coming up and I was going to get a cake from La Moraga Sweet but thought, actually this may be more fun.
Omaya is the owner of Cake Couture Marbella and can do almost any designs in 3d. We have a pug dog and me and my daughter thought it would be fun to put him on the cake.
So we emailed so photos over, chose the colours & flavours and voila! It was made. I met her on Sunday to collect it but she does to deliveries too along the coast.

Then as a gift she put in these cupcakes below for me to try. They were for a wedding she was catering for. They were delicious. There was actually 9 beautifully boxed but unfortunately 4 got eaten rather quickly before I realised I hadnt taken a photo. Lots of different flavours and toppings.

The birthday cake I was very pleased with. I chose a plain sponge with 1 layer of chocolate filling as sometimes Fully Iced cakes can be quite rich. Another great thing was that it was so easy to cut - no mess! We had it on sunday for 6 adults and 5 kids, then on Monday for 3 of us and there was still plenty left yesterday. Prices vary depending on Size and Style so best to call Cake Couture.
You can find all the details here on Cake Couture Website

Learn Some Spanish Holiday Words
In Mercadona I find being English an embarrasment sometimes. Now we werent in "Puerto Banus" where some people say everyone should speak English.
We were in Mercadona in Los Naranjos near El Angel an extremely Spanish Area where maybe some of the people that work there live. Now many of these people that work in Mercadona I have spoken to and they went to the local schools and many dont speak English...why would they? They are Spanish living in Spain.
Do you think there is ANYONE that goes into Tescos and Says...¿Cuanto? ¿Que? ¿Donde esta Arroz? NO THEY DONT.
So at the till the other day, an Irish Lady packing up her bags, the girls says 17€uros. "HOW MUCH?. WHAT? HOW MUCH DID YOU SAY....its an embarrasment.
Its like any supermarket, just look at the numbers on the till...the money is the same just has the name Euros. Its not like having Pesetas or Shillings anymore. If you dont speak Spanish - FINE but you can enter a supermarket, get your stuff and buy it and you dont need to say anything. Just look at the cash till.
Then on the other till were some Scandinavians...who didnt speak Spanish but spoke great English! The same - HOW MUCH? WHAT?
Many Spanish people wont recognise the accent and will just assume many people speaking English are English.
Come on, its not that hard to learn a couple of words like Hola, Gracias, Adios.
In England there is the debate that if any foreigners are going to live in England they should speak ENGLISH...I bet the first people to agree to that are many of those people who cant say 1 word in Spanish.

Security Companies in Spain - Prosegur
Last year we took out a contract with Prosegur. We negotiated hard and came out with the whole connection free.
Our month contract was just 39.44 €uros per month. That was the price and the connection was free...nothing else said.
Then suddenly we are into our 2nd year and the monthly instalments have gone up to 48.44€.
May not sound much but this is a 20% increase....THERES A CRISIS!!!
So I email them and got a response back very quickly - a good sign!!! But saying that last year we got a certain half price offer for part of the payment which was 6€ and now 13€.
Funny that nothing was said at the time.
Im in negotiations now....will let you know how I get on.

How to Train Your Dragon Film in English Marbella
Last weekend we went to Myramar Fuengirola Cinema. It had been a awful day weather wise and just when we went into the cinema, the sun came out.
As it was me, my husband and daughter we went to Myramar Cinema as they had more VO (version original) or VOS (version original with Subtitles)...normally when its just me & my daughter we go to Puerto Banus and watch Spanish.
We didnt know what we were going to see until we got there and decided on How to Train Your Dragon. I do try and take care with what she watches as she can be very sensitive. Alice in Wonderland looked too scary.
All the kids films had 7 years old on it...but I was watching families with numerous kids well under 7 going in.
We decided on The Dragon Film although my daughter is just 6, many of our friends had said their kids were fine.
The film was brilliant...there were a few moments where even I jumped out of my chair and it wasnt even in 3d. My daughter jumped a few times too. There were kids far too young in there that were crying...it was very noisy and distracting.
Brilliant film and my daughter who is 6years and 4 months loved it. No Nightmares!!!
The queue to get tickets was really long but it did move quickly. The seats were fantastic, like big armchairs....actually worth the 25 minute drive I think!

Next Online
I just had an absolute shock with the ONLINE World.
I was on Next Website...putting a few things in my basket as always and never really buying it. But this time I really did want to buy it and get it sent to my friend who is coming over next week. So Im filling in all the details and then wanted to put a promotional code in for Free Delivery that I found.
Im not too sure what happened but I get a "Your Order has been Made and will be Despatched" - I havent paid for it. Not only that the address was wrong.
So have been on the phone sounding rather dodgy trying to cancel my order....what a palavor!
I cannot beleive you can still get things delivered without paying first!!! Madness.

Clothes & Shoe Bins in Marbella
Yesterday I saw a man taking things out of the Bin which is for Clothes & Shoes. Its one of those bins thats always by the recycling areas.
He was well prepared with a hook on a long stick and a number of carrier bags. Im not entirely sure where these items go to but do know that I have seen numerous people breaking into these bins and once even loading up their van.
By the time Id walked back to my car, police were already with him questioning him.
So if you do have clothes & shoes that you want to know go to the right place it may be better handing them into the charity shops directly.

Are you Stuck Costa Del Sol - mini bus Malaga to Calais
The situation seems to be getting worse and our friends that are stuck here just want to get home to their families. After a few people talking they have got a mini bus from Malaga to Calais.
Its just a mini bus going to take over 22 hours or so and if full will be 300€ per person.
The news is saying that before you get to Calais for train or ferry you really should have booked a ticket...but many people are just going as they just want to be nearer to home.
If you are interested in doing this route then call Vanessa on 0034 615 763 349 quote "Jo"
Alternatively there are the trains www.renfe.es Malaga to Madrid then Madrid up to Santander Bilbao or Paris but maybe sold out.
If you have any suggestions to help those stuck please leave a comment.

Dress Alterationers La Cañada Marbella
After a morning going through my wardrobe, I realised I didnt really need to buy new dresses but get my old ones shortened. They hang in my wardrobe as each time I put them on I dont feel comfy - but didnt realise it was just because they were too long.
So I took them into the Alteration People in La Cañada and the lady asked me to try them on so she could pin them up.
Very nice lady. Ready tomorrow, 19.90€.
I have 3 more but thought Id see what their quality is like first.
Will let you know.

As Ive mentioned before, when driving around Marbella - drive 100% correct.
1) Make sure you have all your papers in the car including driving licence.
2) Indicate exactly when needed.
3) Do not use mobile phone.
4) Put lights on in tunnel
5) I dont even park on the opposite side of the road facing the wrong way anymore.
At the moment that are stopping many people and fining them left right and centre to get money.

Marbella is Changing - What do you think needs to be changed?
Yesterday my husband went along to a meeting here in Marbella along with the Mayoress of Marbella, the Junta de Andalucia and the Tourism Office.
They are all working hard to make a better name for Marbella. Marbella is a fantastic place, close to the UK, sunshine, beaches, great for sporting events, but all the bad press, the corruption scandals - well its taken its good name away.
Even we wondered what we were doing living in a place like this, full of corruption & backhanders right on our doorstep.
But these people want change and they are asking us foreigners for our help too into making Marbella a great holiday destination and a fantastic place to live.
I already put in one of my requests which was to make taxis have meters. Taxis are often holiday makers first port of call and many times I know they have ripped people off charging 100€ for a 60€ job. They cover up the fixed prices at the airport so noone knows what the price is meant to be and holiday makers do not know about the price book they carry. A meter in the taxi will stop people getting ripped off.
Another thing that many people are disliking are the prostitutes in Puerto Banus that seem to be moving near to front line pestering men as they walk by.
What upsets you about Marbella?
What do you want to see changed?
Leave your comments and I will foward them.

Flights from Malaga to UK today
All flights have now been cancelled going into the UK today due to the Volcanic Ash in Iceland.
Its causing so many problems for people trying to get back home to the UK including a friend of ours. He cant get a flight back now until Saturday Night and was meant to be leaving this afternoon.
If you are searching for flights back to the UK and cant find from Malaga, try Granada, Jerez, Seville & Gibraltar too. Ive been searching for a flight back tomorrow morning and cant find anything until late tomorrow night.

Will My Child Speak Spanish at an International School?
If you are thinking of sending your child to an International School, yet you still want your child to be bilingual, you really need to put in quite a lot of effort outside the home and do read the following.
My daughter goes to a Private International School. When she started at 3 years 9 months she was as bilingual as a 3 year old could be as she went to a Spanish Nursery.
In the first year of school, Early Years, some of the schools still have a Spanish Speaking Teaching Assistant in their class all day long. Her Spanish Speaking was good and due to her speaking better Spanish than her Spanish friends Spoke English - they mainly conversed in Spanish out of school.
Then in the following year I started to see a slight change. The Spanish Childrens English started to improve quite alot and I found my daughter not speaking half as much Spanish as she did the previous year.
Come the following year - Year 1 - this is when my concerns really started regarding her Spanish Language. She really stopped speaking Spanish, when her Spanish friends come to her house they speak English, when she goes to their house they speak English and at school they speak English.
I realised this is not right, as the only winners here are the Spanish Children and many of my friends whom are Spanish say the same. Some of these schools say they are "Bilingual" but with nearly 7 hours a day of English with just over 3 hours a week of Spanish - regardless of living in Spain there is no way my daughters Spanish will ever be as good as the Spanish Childrens´ English.
So having spoke to a number of people we decided that the only way our daughter will get a fair chance is if English is Spoken in the English Home and Spanish is spoken in the Spanish Home.
We live on an Urbanisation with mainly Spanish Families whos kids go to the same school and they are accustomed to speaking English. I have spoken to the mums and they will do their best to encourage our Children to speaking only Spanish in their home. I have spoken to a couple of other mums and they say they will do their best too to help and even correct my daughter when she says something wrong.
Its been quite hard for my daughter to suddenly change language as for a couple of years now shes always spoken English. But we are getting there and in just 2 weeks have definately seen an improvement. Shes gaining her confidence again in Speaking and its so lovely to hear but she still needs as much conversation as possible.
In the school the kids do follow the Spanish Curriculum are reading and writing in Spanish but the only thing they cannot offer is the conversation as they dont have the time.
If the Spanish Language is important to you...
1) Ask Spanish Parents to ALWAYS on ONLY speak to your child in Spanish from day 1.
2) Kids Speak Spanish in the Spanish House & English in the English House.
3) Ask parents to correct your child when they say something wrong - its the only way they will learn.
4) Spanish TV in the Home really does help.
I have thought about changing schools numerous times but she loves her school and we like it too and if we can get the help and support from other parents too then I can see my daughter getting the best of both worlds just like their children.
The minute you see the language changes in the homes - nip it in the bud straight away!
A note for Spanish Parents...
I know many Spanish Parents were very worried about their childrens English in the very first year of school. In their second year - Reception they really started to learn and speak a bit more English yet some Spanish Parents were still very worried that their children werent understanding or speaking any English.
But I can honestly say, by the third year in school these kids are speaking English brilliantly and with confidence and some have parents that dont speak a word of English. Some older children I know speak English so well you have no idea they are Spanish, German, Swedish etc - its really amazing.

Sky TV Company for Urbanisations
On our Urbanisation we have had so many problems with SKY TV. We had one company for many years and they knew the place inside out. Due to pressures of the community, the president changed companies....
Going from the FAT INTO THE FIRE.
We now have another company who just blames the old one. Personally I cannot stand any company or professional who just slags of their competitors. Not professional at all.
If you are a Sky TV Company and think you can solve all our problems and be sure to be reliable, honest and efficient and not charge for all your mistakes please do email me jomarbella@gmail.com or leave a comment.

Terrasana Golden Mile
We were invited to Terrasana tonight for a tasting session of their new menu.
If you´ve read my blog over the years you will know that Ive had a love hate relationship with Terrasana. This is the problem with Franchises though - and how important consistancy is - The food, The Staff, The Price.
Golden Mile Terrasana is proabably my favourite one, as every week they have live music which is the one thing many places lack here.
So we arrived at 8pm and took a table outside as it was full inside. Never seen it so busy! First plate to come was the Glazed Salmon and Potatoe Cake which I thought was tortilla, then the most delicious Burger in a Bun with Cheese and rocket and other yummy bits. This was my favourite dish.
Another dish that came along was Chicken Satay which was really nice and different as it was crunchy on the outside too. Next up was the Lamb with Rice - I liked the lamb but the rice was probably the one thing that I didnt Love. Then some Beef with Balsamic Mushrooms and spinach which was also very good. Oh and there were Prawns in Tempura which my husband said were Amazing - Im intolerant to them so couldnt try for myself.
They have changed the main courses and also looked at their prices too. The burger which was very good would normally be served with Chips was priced 12.50€ - not bad price considering Yanks is around 14€ & Hard Rock for their very very basic burger is around 10€. Other main courses were 13 & 14€ with the most expensive being the Rib Eye Steak at around 17€.
The atmosphere was really nice, nice people, great band on stage and good food. Having looked around their notice boards they really are doing alot of things, working with local farmers, selling the local produce in their Eco Shop adjoining, and doing many things for charity - it really is good positive stuff they are doing. They also have Cooking Classes for kids & adults too.
Every Thursday Night from 9pm they have live music too but do call to check just incase it changes. But definately a really nice place to go for a casual dinner in a lively place.
Whilst I have many moans about some of the restaurants here, some of them really are trying to make things works in these hard times and looking at their menus, food and prices.
Good luck with the new menu.

Marbella Port
What lovely weather we are finally having, after such a terrible winter we deserve it!
Today we started off with an Easter Egg hunt in the garden, followed by a home cooked sunday lunch - cannot beat your own.
Then a walk along the Paseo in Marbella. Our friends mentioned that around the Port had all be modernised - and what a difference it makes.
All above the Port where the bars are, above there has been built on with kids play area, fountains, lots of places & benches to sit on. There were lots of people just chilling and there was a lovely atmosphere around.
Its made some of the bars below make themselves look a bit better too.
So lovely to see such positive changes finally happening in Marbella.

I keep hearing about Small World and how great it is. So last night we thought we´d try it. We are not use to it being so busy around Marbella as it is at the moment so didnt think of booking.
We walked in and first impressions, busy, buzzing but no staff to talk to. Eventually I found someone to ask if we could have a table and the answer as he was passing me a bit abruptly was "no fully booked".
Not, hold on, look Im really sorry we are fully booked at the moment, next time please book so you are not dissapointed - just something that would let me leave thinking they cared.
Anyway, ended up at Thai Gallery where we were greated straight away. That first impression is so important.

Danny Garcia the Owner seems to be taking over Marbella and what a fantastic thing it is.
