Escuela de Idiomas Oficiales - Government Language Courses Learn Spanish

About 1 week ago my good friend from www.eyeonspain.com mentioned to me about Escuela de Idiomas Oficiales...the offical school of Languages run by the Ayuntamiento.

They have them all over Spain and its really cheap for the year.  You dont need to be on low income...just to live here and have NIE Number.

So I found the office in Marbella, spoke to the secretary who said they were full but left my name and number and they said they will call me.

Unbeleivable they called to say come the next day.  I went along, gave my name etc, Teacher gives you your class.  Then I filled in a form, had to pay the money at the bank, take the form back to the school and I started on Monday.

Its a big group of about 15 to 20 people but the teacher is very good so far.  Its levels and you do take tests and continue up.

It was 68€uros yes just 68€ and you can learn Spanish, French, German, Arabic or English.  Amazing!

So if you want to learn Spanish and money has been the problem, there are no excuses now.

The only problem may be that they dont have space as you are supposed to apply in the March to start in September.

La Campana, Nueva Andalucia Los Farolillos & Il Ristorante

Yesterday we tried to book lunch out Il Ristorante in La Campana, but they were fully booked.  So we went to our old favourite Los Farolillos.

Los Farolillos was normally packed...at 1pm with English and then 2pm with Spanish every single day.  Yesterday it was empty and we were the only ones in there most of the time.

Food is still good and great value for money.

5 of us, 2 x Pil Pil, 1 x Salad, 3 times Escalope Milanese, 1 x pasta with tomato sauce, 1 x chicken with tarragon, bread, 1 x pudding, 3 x coffees and a couple of beers and tinto verano and the bill was 75€uros.

The escalope milanese is delicious!

The sad thing about driving into La Campana are the big bars / restaurants on the right...they are all closed.  These used to be packed with builders and other workers / people for lunches.  All 3 big bars are closed.  1 is now a driving school which speaks Spanish and English.

Seeing this change is sad.  With no more building allowed, no more workers are needed therefore they dont take lunch meaning restaurant has no customers...the domino effect  is incredible.

The Latest on The Strike in Marbella - La Huelga en Marbella

From The Sur Newspaper http://www.diariosur.es/

A percentage of " very high " has supported the general strike Estepona, according to the union CCOO Cleaning and waste collection only work with services minimum of two drivers , for use in health facilities and the market .

At City Hall, follow-up was "positive", according to this union , which it estimated between 60 and 70 % participation in the strike by municipal workers building Puertosol , where centralized much of the services of the Consistory .

Most shops in the central street Terrace have gone on strike. The dissemination of information picket has also made the closure of several banks that first thing in the morning were open.

In Marbella, First thing in the morning the major incidents were recorded in the bus station . According to police sources, information pickets blocked the exit of the minimum service , which had to delay the start of the trip until two hours later and escorted by police .

of the city, were largely shops closed early in the morning, when the pickets were starting to walk the streets and getting to close early businesses . The normalcy was the dominant trend also in the hospital Costa del Sol , centers health and business park La Canada, where has stepped up private security to avoid incidents .

The only , the presence of some union before opening time without arguments, informed sources said. From City Hall also mentioned that the activity was developing normally.

However, tension grew in Marbella with the passing hours . After concentrating in the central park of La Alameda , escorted by members of the National Police and local throughout its route, an informational picket consisting of approximately 150 people , which amounted to 75 percent up of the strike around 11.00 hours, they headed Huerta de los Cristales heading to Mercadona the populous neighborhood of Plaza de Toros.

There, holding a banner against the labor reform and the cry of ' The strike has succeeded, the Chinese have closed ' and ' Do not look at us , join us! " , forced the closure of the supermarket for a few minutes , but not before accused of scabs who worked there and pick on a fight with the front door with exploding firecrackers included.

But the worst part is a bakery located just opposite. So there went the pickets, who used the presence of customers at outdoor tables to break glasses and bottles and dump bins to the impotence of its owner and staff.

Not A Good Day for Shopping - The Strike La Huelga

So I thoguht today was mainly the public workers, people that work for the Ayuntamiento  / Council striking today as they are strking because they have been given a 5% pay cut.  They also have had redundancy cut from 45 days per year to 30 days per year....For Employers to continue to be able to employ people this needs to go down to about 10 days per year.

I really had to get a couple of things from La Cañada...I drive into the underground car park and its all closed up.  Why?

La Cañada was deserted...all the shops were open but dead.  At the begining close to Mango, I saw that trouble was about to start as the Guardia Civil turned up by the loadful.  All the security rushed towards the door.  Phones going, Ambulance came....I just thought....Im getting out of here and walked up to the middle exit / entrance by Mc Donalds.

OMG, my heart is still racing away.  You couldnt see out...there were just hundreds of people standing outside, chanting, banging on the windows, bomb noises going off...it was awful.

For one of the few moments I just wanted to get out of La Cañada as quickly as possible.

One door was open and I asked the security if I could leave...they said yes, but just as I was about to leave, suddenly the banging and the chanting and shouting and abuse got really bad....I stepped back in.

Then I found my moment and was chauffered out by about 5 secuirty people there and just walked as fast as I could to my car jumping out of my shoes as big bangs were going off.

At the moment, its relatively ok compared to riots in Greece...but if its stays like that by the end of the day I will be very surprised.  I wont be surprised if doors are smashed  and theres more trouble.

At these things you have the people that genuingly want to strike and beleive in what they are doing...then you have troublemakers.

Were you affected today?

Hardrock Cafe Puerto Banus

Dear Jo,

Can you tell me if Hardrock Cafe is the same as in London, is the food and prices the same?  Do you know if it sells tshirts?

Thank you

Hi,

I havent been to Hardrock Cafe in London for many years now, but do remember it being really busy and lively, staff overexcited etc.

Here, Ive been twice and its ok, but I personally dont think its quite got the same atmosphere.  The food is good and actually not bad prices...it actually makes other places that sell burgers look expensive.  Food was good and big portions.  Theres a bar area which seems quite popular too.

There is a shop which sells tshirts, the teddy bears and some other things too.  Im not too sure on the prices of these.

If you come in the summer then you must book, this summer was their first summer and waiting lists were up to an hour.

Hardrock Cafe Puerto Banus Telephone number is  34 952 90 80 24.

Sushi in Puerto Banus Sushi in Marbella

Hi Jo, we are coming to marbella on holiday next week and would love to know where there are some good sushi places.  If you could let me know.  Thank you Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,

There are numerous places to have sushi.  Sensations Sushi is in Nueva Andalucia / Puerto Banus just by the bullring.  Very good.

Then there is Wasabi which is Nueva andalucia / Puerto Banus.  Wasabi is also very good food, bit like Yo Sushi with the food going round.

I have heard that Sushi de Artistes along the Golden Mile in Marbella is one of the best but very expensive.

In Puerto banus itself there is Norako or something similar jsut to the left of El Corte Ingles.  There is also Sushi K Fe near the cinema but whilst the food was good we didnt have a great experience there.

So you have a few to choose from...hope this helps

Have we got it wrong? Working Hard?

I had to quickly blog this whilst its still in my head.

Today I started my Spanish Course and I really enjoyed sitting in a room, listening and learning again.

In the class today there were 3 pictures of people with about their lives and we had to read and answer the question...."who had the best life here in Spain"?

So....read the following and who would you say had the best life?

Number 1 is an English Guy about 50, been here for 20 years, married a Spanish woman and speaks Spanish in the house.  Owns a Language School and works alot of hours.  Loves the climate, the food and the people.

Number 2:  A young girl who one day wants to live in South America, she has to take a Spanish exam so is here to study.  Studies in the morning and goes to college in the afternoon.

Number 3:  Young guy from Columbia doing his Masters and goes out every night partying with his friends.

Ok So who do you think?  Number 1, 2 or 3?

Well if I tell you that there was about 20 people in the room of all different nationalities from Chinese to English, French to Russian, practically all of us said Number 1...the English Guy.

The only Spanish Person in the room was the teacher (and this is after talking about the Strike on Wednesday)  and she was the only person that said....."Does he really have the best life?   He works alot of hours!"

mmmmmm

Fairplay Hotel Benalup - Spa Hotel 1.5 hours Away from Marbella

If you are looking for a break away, where you can completely and utterly relax, dont have to go out looking for restaurants, fancy a massage or round of golf, and only want to be too far from Marbella, the Fairplay Hotel in Benalup is the place.

My husband surprised me...well I say surprised...I found out as he didnt close the website down on my pc, but he organised for our little girl to be looked after and the dog to go the Tiny Dog Hotel.....this is quite a big deal....we have quite a Man / Woman relationship where I do all the odd jobs and phoning

He took me a way for night to Fairplay.  We left at 10.30 and was quite early so I managed a sneek shop in Primark Algeciras.

At 1pm we got to the hotel and it was stunning.  We were told where everything was and Breakfast Lunch & Dinner, mini bar and all other drinks and food was free...well I say free..."inclusive"

We had lunch at the Pool House and it was delicious, the best steak in ages.  For the evening we chose the Asia Restaurant....amazing!  We had a couple of starters and main course each of sushi, chicken satay, tempura, thai green curry, beef curry...it was all so delicious Im dribbling as Im writing this.

I couldnt wait for breakfast...breakfast was amazing with everything from full english, cereals, fruit, jamon and cheese...everything great.

Our check out was about 12 but they let us stay till 3pm and due to a problem with insects they even gave us another free lunch....so back to the Pool House for another great steak.

Seriously...the food was amazing and I must have put on about 1 stone in 24 hours.  The Spa area was Amazing and we had a massage which was just incredible and just what we needed.

Staff were brilliant.

I cannot say anything bad whatsoever...so men if you want to treat your lady go to Fairplay in Benalup.

What clothes to pack for Marbella in October

Hi Jo,

I found your email address on eblogger. My husband and I will be visiting Marbella from October 2nd through 10th with another couple. We’re coming from the US and I’m trying to figure out appropriate clothing to pack. I like to look fashionable, yet be comfortable for walking around and seeing different areas during the day. I know Marbella is a beach resort, but the weather is supposed to be in the 70s Fahrenheit, so this makes me feel like I should be bringing/wearing “autumn clothes”. I’m thinking pants/jeans, sleeveless tops with sweaters, boots, leggings, etc… But, since it’s a beach area, should I be bringing shorts and sundresses? I’m so confused! I want to bring the proper clothing and look fashionable, yet be comfortable to explore the area. Is Marbella similar to Boston as far as dress? Also, is it possible that there may be any warm days to go to the beach or pool? We are staying at the Marriott Ocean Club in Marbella. If you know of any cities we should tour during the day or any restaurants in the Marbella area for night, as well as night life, I’d love to hear your input!

Thank you!!!

Dear Jenna,

Personally, this time of year we recommend layers. Jeans / Trousers with tshirts, vest with shirts, cardigan. A waterproof light jacket. It not cold during the day but night times can get a bit chilly.

Night times a cardigan / pashina and socks for the apartment floors.

Swimming Costumes / Shorts.

Many people at the moment wear shorts with vest and cardigans for first thing in the morning and evening.

Layers is what we always say, nothing too thick.

I hope this helps

Where to buy Second Hand Cars in Nueva Andalucia

hi there
thank you for your blog - always very useful information!

i'm looking to buy a 2nd hand car in nueva andalucia/surrounding area - would you have any advice as to where we might find one/how to go about getting a good deal/things to look out for?

many thanks

Natalie

Dear Natalie,

Best place we think...if you dont speak much Spanish is start off at a garage. We first bought our second hand car at ford - as it was legal and a proper company. We just didnt know about the laws, or debt maybe cars hold by the person.

Have a look here at the end of Marbella. Alternatively around Nueva Andalucia by the bull ring are often cars for sale and in La Cañada...but you have to deal with people you dont know.

Personally Id spend the extra and go through a prope garage

Its in Nueva Andalucia, just under Cafe Pasta where the beautician used to be.   I think if its priced ok it should do well there.

Fat Pugs in Spain

Its just over a year since we bought our darling Charlie the Pug.  He really is a very very good dog and all the people that say "oh you mustnt buy from a pet shop" you dont know what you are buying...well we have a wonderful dog and everyone, well except for a couple of people mentioning no names, absolutely love him.

However, Spain is hot and hot is not great for Pugs.  Since June, our Pug put on just over a Kilo.  The vet said he is borderline obese!!!

The problem was that come June July August, he could only go out early morning or late at night once it cooled down.  Now we are really working to get some weight off and measuring his food out exact and walking him around the block 3 or 4 times a day which is nearly a 1k each time.

In just under a week of doing this 2 people have mentioned that he looks slimmer and getting his figure back.  He was just 1 big lump.

Next summer I think I will put him on special diet food by Royal Canin for the 3 months of the summer.

Crabbing & Rock Pools Marbella

Our little girl just loves the water and collecting all kinds of little creatures...she is fasinated by it all and has no fear.

So we take her along the wall infront of Puente Romano Hotel where all the kids are catching crabs. Its really good fun for them.

Just further along walking towards Puerto Banus, depending  on the tide are some brilliant rockpools.  Last week early there were women collecting and cleaning all the muscles they had got.

We are so lucky living close to the sea and sometimes we forget that.

Its fun, its being in the fresh are and its free!

Remax Nueva Andalucia - Remax Marbella

Remax Estate Agents seem to be taking over the estate agency market at the moment with offices popping up here and there.

They have the nice corner office in Centro Plaza and opened just a couple months ago.

Heres the website http://www.remax.es/

Electrician Nueva Andalucia - Nueva Andalucia Electricians

Reliable Electricians Required Regularly on this site....Want to advertise?  Want your details passed on?

Hi Jo,

Firstly, I love your website! There is nothing else like it and it really helps me to keep in touch with life in Neuva Andalucia when I'm back here in England! I have recently managed to buy an apartment over in Neuva Andalucia but I am needing to get hold of an electrical certificate (or boletin as they call it in Spain) before I can transfer the contract for the electricity supply into my name. I also need to have a new aircon system installed. It is, however, completely astounding me how difficult it is to find an electrical contractor over there on the internet, but I notice from one of your blogs that there is a maintenance company you can recommend. The only trouble is that it has been three years since you recommended them, but hopefully they are still up and running and I can get them in to have a look! Do you still know their details? It would be greatly greatly appreciated if you do!

Thanks, and keep up the good work - I love it!!

Regards,
S

Dear S

I am so sorry for the delay. Had long summer holidays and daughter only went back on Wednesday to school just geting round to answering questions.

I do am actually looking for a reliable electrician and also someone reliable to fit new aircon units. At the moment I dont have anyone that I can really recommend.

I will post your question up on the blog and see if anyone else can recommend someone.

If you have found someone useful in the meantime,do let me know.

Stabbing in Bar Nueva Andalucia - Which Bar in Nueva Andalucia was the Stabbing

The past couple of weeks a few stabbing have been reported and there was the armed robbery at Carrefour Estepona the other morning....not good news at all.

There are reports that a man was stabbed in the arms and legs in a bar in Nueva Andalucia.  Apparently there was another stabbing in the same bar last month.

Does anyone know which bar this is?

Having Cancer in Nueva Andalucia, Marbella, Costa Del Sol

In the past couple of weeks, all I have heard about is Cancer.  A couple of my friends have close family members whom have recently diagnosed with Cancer, 1 of those people died a few days ago.  Then today I had a bit of shock when I saw that  an acquantance  was going through Chemo now and they only discovered they had cancer at the begining of the summer.

It just seems to be everywhere at the moment and anything can happen at any age.  A fine example is Jade Goody.  The year before last I found a lump in my breast and just left it as I preferred not to know....stupid really.  But in the end I went for a scan and biopsy and everything was benign.

So, if you are living here and found out that you have cancer and would like to be in touch with other people in going through the same thing, please leave a comment here or email me direct on jo@nuevaandalucialife.com where maybe you can meet others in the same position.

Bag Snatching Nueva Andalucia, Puerto Banus, Fuengirola, Malaga

Over the past few weeks I have heard of numerous people loosing their bags to theives.

At the airport, on the beach, in restaurants.  Keep your eye on your bags at all times.  Check whats inside and only carry what is necessary.

To replaces passports, driving licenses, residencia is a nightmare.

Make sure you have a photocopy of everything back at home.

New Kosher Restaurant Nueva Andalucia

As I was driving around the other day I found a new Kosher Restaurant opened up near Andalucia Plaza Hotel.  Not where Terrasana is but the other side where the bank is.

Its called Shalom and the website is here http://www.marbellakosher.com/

Body Boarding Tarifa

For the first time ever we did body boarding.  We bought a cheap...well 15€ hello kitty board for my daughter.  As we passed a proper surfing shop, my husband thought he may as well buy one.  And bought a proper one although it was a bit small for him...cost 40€

Just arrived in Tarfia and already blown 100€ on bits and pieces.

However, the difference in the body boarding was incredible...so if you are going to tarifa, spend the extra bit of money and buy a proper board!

We went to the beach in front of Arte Vida Hotel everyday.  Its easy to park, the car park is monitored too.

All along the high street are surf shops to buy your boards

Los Vientos Chiringuito Tarifa

We went here a couple of times for drinks and one day for lunch.

Staff were really nice....actually all staff were really nice in Tarifa. I had a pasta salad with pesto & chicken which was delicious.  Then we also had Tempura Vegetables which were probaby the best Tempura Veg we have had....I had to say but even better than Wasabi!   Then we had Calamari - also excellent.

Los Vientos is just next to Arte Vida Hotel on the beach.

Will definately be back for lunch again!

La Oca de Sergio Tarifa

One night in Tarifa we went to a restaurant called La Oca de Sergio.  Its at the end town near Koala Hotel by the wall around the city.

Staff lovely.  I hadnt felt too good the day before and really fancied a steak.  My daughter had pesto and pasta and my husband had a spaghetti, prawn and cream dish.  The portions were HUGE.

My steak was the size of an A4 size of paper..it was far too big.  The small amount I ate was very tasty.  The pasta dishes were EXCELLENT I hear. 3 main courses, huge bottle of water, beers and tea / coffee was about 40€

Staff were lovely, food excellent and great value.

Next time me and my daughter could definately share a pasta and there would still be some left.

Hotel Koala Tarifa - Nice hotels in Tarifa Town

Whilst we didnt take a holiday this summer....we thought why?  People spend hundreds to come here and sit on the beach, or by the pool in the sun and we have it for free lets enjoy it....

However after 11 weeks we needed to get out of Marbella for a couple of nights.

We went to Tarifa and found 1 hotel with 2 nights free....Tarifa gets really booked up so you really need to plan in advance.

We stayed in Koala Hotel right in the town.  Its a really cute hotel with 5 apartments.  Our apartment had a kitchen area, sofa / bed for my little girl, double bed for us, table & chairs, bathroom and direct access to the chill out / garden area.

Very nice, great design and use of colours and space.  Loved it.

The staff were really friendly and couldnt do enough for you.

The only down bits that I could find were the fact that there were ants everywhere and had hundreds in our kitchen if we left the slightest bit of crumb out.  Then they were also by the breakfast in the morning.   We checked out at 12 and left our cases there and spent a couple of hours on the beach.  When I went back to collect our cases, I was bursting for a pee and asked if I could use the toilet...the reply "no I dont have one!"

So where the hell do they go to the toilet.  If it was a  really cheap b&b  at 25€ per night I might understand then not having a loo but 160€ per night?

Well other than that it was very nice.  But Tarifa wind is really bad and when its bad you cannot go to the beach, so now we realised that actually if you go in the summer and have kids, best to find a hotel with a pool.

One day was so bad we drove to Melia Zaraha de los Atunes where we went years ago.  Walked in, had lunch and then just sat ourselves by the pool for a couple of hours.  We did think a couple of times the lifeguard was going to say something but he didnt.  The pool here is amazing!!!

Read about our food at Los Vientos & La Oca de Sergio

Torremolinos Aqua Park

We went to Torremolinos Aqua Park for the first time ever on Sunday.  I think Sunday was a bit of a mistake as we queued to get in for about 1 hour.  It didnt open until 11 and think many people forgot as it was opening at 10.

So queing was not fun and the kids were very bored.  Finally at the cash till, 22.50€ for an adult and 16.50€ for a kid.  I found this go-go card discount ticket with 3€ of per person which they accepted.

So it was 52.50€ to go in for 2 adults and 1 child.

Once in our friends "the expert" ran straight to buy the round floats to go on the rides, whilst we went over the childrens area to find a place to sit.

The kids ran straight in and for them it was like heaven.  My little girl absolutely loved it and this was just a small slide in the water....she was so excited.

We took a couple of sun beds, laid our stuff out and also had made lunch too so no need to buy lunch here.  Everyone had cool boxes so to take your own food wasnt a problem.

There are numerous rides and my daughter being 6 and a half was big enough to go on most including the rapid waves, black hole and the slalom.  She loved all of it although she did hurt her neck abit on one of the rides.

We were really shocked at some of the parents who were practically throwing their kids with armbands where were about 3 years old down the slalom which I personally found really fast and scary.  How the staff allowed them on I dont know.

The queues for the rides were quite long and sometimes 30 to 40 minutes.

However, all in all a really good day.  Kids absolutely loved it and I felt that 6 years old was a great age to go there.

The only thing I think was disgusting was the fact that you had to pay for everything else on top.

Sunbeds 3.50€   the Floats were 12€ (have to return them)  lockers 5€  then all the photos etc.

Now the floats are important to know....when you go to some of the rides you will see a queue which you think is for the ride...no these for for the floats (for people that dont want to buy) then once you have your float you then have to queue up for the ride.

There are enough rides without using this big inflatables and actually it was a pain in the arse to shlap them around everywhere.

If you take all your lunch, drinks etc, sit on the grass and dont bother with the inflatables, actually its not bad value as you will be there all day.

I loved it and would definately go back.

Sylvie Beauty Academy Nueva Andalucia / Puerto Banus

When we went to Wasabi the other night we had a little walk around the poligono / shops there.  I came across a Beauty Academy called Sylvies.

They had an advert for acrylic nails for about 30€ and then refills for 18€.  I thought this was very cheap although Im not too sure if this would be a student doing it.

Anyway, I thought I was pass the info on for anyone interested.

Sylvie is behind Wasabi in Nueva Andalucia / Puerto Banus...opposit Thai Gallery Dreamers Nightclub.

Nearly Back to Normal Nueva Andalucia Life

Summer is nearly over, tomorrow is d day when my little girl starts school and enters year 2.  I do not know where the years have gone...once they start school, the years pass so quickly.

I have had a great summer...and yes, Nueva Andalucia Life has had to take a back seat in my life whilst I enjoy the summer with my little girl.  She didnt do summer camp, we didnt go away for a summer holiday...nope everyday we spent together enjoying the pool and beach, seeing friends and family that were here on holiday and catching up with some of her school buddies.

But in the next few days I will be getting myself back together.

Wasabi Nueva Andalucia - Wasabi Puerto Banus

After hearing so many good things about Wasabi and the fact that my daughter absolutely loves Sushi, we treated ourselves to a meal at Wasabi Restaurant the other day.

On entering, there was eye contact straight away...always a good sign!  Decor, feel was all very nice.  Waitress very nice, smiley and helpful.  Then the Owner or Manager came over the check all was ok.

Our little girl loved it and couldnt beleive all the food passing us by on the conveyor belt...can work out quite expensive when they keep picking up the bowls as they pass.

We had a few sushi bits, then ordered the beef in dumpling and a prawn rice.  Followed by more sushi as it passed.  Then we tried the mixed vegetable tempura, followed by more sushi.  For dessert we had banoffee pie which was fantastic...really good.

All the food was great.  My only concern was that when I normally eat sushi its cold with that fresh feeling as it goes into your mouth and with things going around and around sometimes I felt it was a little warm.  But sitting there for a couple of hours watching the guys make the sushi right in front of you was amazing.    Its not until you watch how long it takes to do that you realise why its not cheap.

Whilst eating there they were making up many box for takeaway and the attention to detail was amazing and it took a long time to put together.

Its not particuarly cheap either.  For 3 of us...the bill was 90€ including tip.  However we did eat quite a lot, some of the flavours were absolutely amazing and the service was very good.

I would go back again.

Wasabi Telephone Number is 0034 952 908 577
